Climate change is increasing the risk of Natech events (natural hazards triggering technological accidents), especially in regions with aging or vulnerable industrial infrastructure. Strengthening cooperation and preparedness across Central Asia is critical for protecting water resources, preventing disasters, and building a more climate-resilient future.
This two-day workshop brings together national authorities, technical experts, operators, academia, NGOs, and international organizations to address the growing climate-related risks associated with Tailings Management Facilities (TMFs) in Central Asia.
📅 21–22 May 2025
📍 Orion Hotel Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan
Key objectives:
🔹 Strengthening climate & disaster risk governance
🔹 Improving safety of mine tailings facilities
🔹 Supporting transboundary cooperation and joint contingency planning
It also kicks off the new UNECE-ESCAP project (2025–2028), aiming to build climate resilience in TMF management across Central Asia.
