On 9–10 April 2026, researchers from the University of Freiburg organised a two-day online workshop on hydrological instrumentation, measurements and data processing, bringing together hydrologists and technical experts from Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan.
The workshop focused on practical workflows used in mountain hydrology monitoring, including water level measurements, discharge monitoring using fluorometers, discharge data preparation and analysis, and rating curve calculations for estimating river flow.
For hydrologists working in mountain catchments, these methods form the basis of reliable river monitoring and water allocation planning. Sessions walked participants through the full workflow from field measurements to processed hydrological datasets, combining theoretical background with practical exercises and technical discussions.
Participants also received access to software tools, remote computing environments through renkulab.io, open-access workshop materials, code repositories, and recorded video sessions, allowing them to revisit the training and continue applying the methods after the workshop concluded. The public GitHub repository remains available as a long-term technical resource for hydrologists and institutions working on water monitoring and hydrological analysis in the region.
Live Russian interpretation was provided throughout both workshop days, supporting participation from field hydrologists and institutions across Central Asia regardless of English proficiency.
The workshop reflects growing efforts to strengthen technical hydrology capacity and regional knowledge exchange at a time when glacier retreat, changing runoff dynamics and increasing pressure on water resources continue to challenge monitoring and water management systems across Central Asia.
