Unveiling the Partnerships for SDGs Platform
The Partnerships for SDGs platform is the UN’s global registry of voluntary commitments and multi-stakeholder partnerships, promoting world-wide engagement of all stakeholders in support of the Sustainable Development Goals. The Platform was initially created in response to a mandate from the 2012 Rio+20 Conference outcomes. Since then, it has been in line with the 17 SDGs, and new partnerships and voluntary commitments keep coming in. It encourages the integrated implementation of the SDGs as a distinctive information center on partnerships that is global in scope and inclusive in reach (encompassing all 17 SDGs). The online platform’s main goal is to encourage collaborations in support of the SDGs. It aims to provide different actors that are involved in multi-stakeholder SDG partnerships and voluntary commitments a platform for sharing knowledge and skills as well as for delivering regular updates on their progress. It also provides information for the 2030 Agenda’s follow-up and review procedures.
Water Stress Alert: A Global Wake-Up Call
According to the United Nations, global water stress levels stood at a relatively safe 18.6% in 2019. However, Southern Asia and Central Asia faced high water stress levels, exceeding 75%. Additionally, Northern Africa experienced an alarming water stress level of over 100%. Disturbingly, since 2015, Western Asia and Northern Africa have witnessed a significant increase in water stress levels. These statistics emphasize the urgent need to address water-related challenges.
WE-ACT's Commitment to SDGs
WE-ACT's objective no. 7: Furthered implementation of the European Green Deal and the Sustainable Development Goals, notably the SDG 6 “Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all”.
WE-ACT is dedicated to expediting the realization of several Sustainable Development Goals linked to water and climate change, with a particular emphasis on SDG 6, which focuses on clean water and sanitation. One of the project’s seven objectives centers around the implementation of the European Green Deal and the SDGs, with a notable focus on SDG 6’s target of ensuring the availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all. In relation to SDG 6, WE-ACT predominantly addresses SDG indicator 6.4.1 “change in water-use efficiency over time”, indicator 6.4.2 “level of water stress: freshwater withdrawal as a proportion of available freshwater resources” and indicator 6.5.2 “proportion of transboundary basin area with an operational arrangement for water cooperation”. Additionally, as SDG target 5.5 is about “ensuring women’s full and effective participation and equal opportunities for leadership at all levels of decision-making in political, economic and public life”, WE-ACT will use its strong stakeholder interaction to embed gender-related issues into innovation design.

Advancing Climate Action and Partnerships
Through the promotion of climate-sensitive water allocation systems and financing mechanisms, the WE-ACT project endeavors to enhance the resilience of water resources management and planning in the face of climate change. By fostering partnerships for the goals between stakeholders in Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan, WE-ACT makes valuable contributions to SDG 13 (climate action) and SDG 17 (partnerships for the goals). These collaborative endeavors create opportunities for shared knowledge, expertise, and resources, strengthening global efforts towards sustainable development.
Joining the United Nations Partnerships for SDGs online platform is a significant milestone for the WE-ACT project. By actively participating in this global registry, WE-ACT demonstrates its commitment to advancing water sustainability, climate action, and multi-stakeholder partnerships in alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals.
